Scripture Reading - 2 Timothy 1:1-5, 3:14-17

“Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, according to the promise of life that is in Christ Jesus,

To Timothy, my dear son: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

I thank God, whom I serve, as my forefathers did, with a clear conscience, as night and day I constantly remember you in my prayers.

Recalling your tears, I long to see you, so that I may be filled with joy.

I have been reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and,

I am persuaded, now lives in you also.”

A Godly Mother's Influence

2 Timothy 1:5, 3:14-17

Mothers do influence their sons and daughters.

A great blessing is to have a godly mother. Take time today to celebrate your mother!

 

Through faith in God and by honoring His Word, godly mothers (and believers) have great influence as they train their children.

 

1) Timothy’s mother and grandmother, were women of sincere faith (2 Timothy 1:5)

We have the word “sincere” and in the Greek it means “without hypocrisy”.

Paul is reminding Timothy of this sincere faith in his life, which Paul first noticed and knew about in the life of Timothy’s mother and grandmother.

 

Sincere faith does not mean we will be perfect.

It implies that we have a real relationship with God.

Sincere faith is contagious.

 

Sincere faith includes.

Believing in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord.

Walking with Christ each day.

Spending time in God’s word and in prayer.

Confronting ourselves with Scripture.

Judging our sin on the thought level.

 

Paul saw Timothy’s sincere faith which was the type of faith that was present in Timothy’s mother and grandmother.

2) Timothy’s mother and grandmother trained him how to live by God’s Word

2 Timothy 3:14–17 (NIV84)

14But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it,

15and how from infancy you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.

16All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness,

17so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

 

Parents are the primary agent for teaching their children about God through God’s word.

We all should be praying for not only parents, but also other godly influencers in the lives of our children.

 

How is this accomplished?

 

2a) Growing in our love for the Scriptures.

“You cannot impart what you do not possess.”

You never know how God is using the planted seeds of His Word in your life and in the lives of those around you!

 

2b) Using the Scriptures to lead our children to saving faith in Christ.

We need to know the revealed truth about Jesus Christ from the Scriptures.

We need to know what Scripture says about the condition of our hearts.

We need to know that God is holy and just.

We need to know that Jesus died on the cross.

 

Timothy’s mother and grandmother used the Scriptures in Timothy’s life.

 

2c) Training our children in how to live by God’s Word.

2 Peter 1:3–4 (NIV84)

3His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness.

4Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.

 

God’s word is mighty to save, but it is also sufficient for all life and godliness.

How are we applying Scripture to our lives?

How are we teaching our children to apply the things they face as they grow to maturity?

 

 

3) Timothy’s mother and grandmother had great influence on him

 

If you look throughout history, you see a lot of what has happened is shaped in the home through godly mothers.

 

We are not taking away anything from the role of godly fathers, however, let us encourage godly mothers in their crucial role that they play.

 

Conclusion

You might be feeling like a failure, take heart, turn back to God!

God honors your repentance.

 

Let us also be reminded of the person of Jesus Christ as our ultimate model for influencing our children, our families, our community, and the world for His glory!

 

 

Questions for Discussion

 

How can you bless your mother today? How can you thank her for being that godly role model in your life?

 

 

For the mothers and grandmothers, what are three things that you feel you could start doing in your life and in the life of your children?

 

 

What are a few areas of your life that you need to surrender to God, so you are better influencers in the lives of children?
